Porsche Cayman Full Body PPF & Ceramic Coating Redo in Richmond, BC

Introduction

At Speed Projects Laboratory, we often see vehicles come in for protection upgrades — but occasionally, we’re trusted to correct work that didn’t meet expectations.

This Porsche Cayman came to us after an initial Paint Protection Film (PPF) and ceramic coating installation performed elsewhere resulted in both quality concerns and miscommunication regarding the scope of work.

What followed was a complete transformation — restoring the vehicle properly and delivering the level of protection the client originally intended.

The Initial Situation

The client originally reached out to us back in December. We had previously worked on his girlfriend’s vehicle, so there was already familiarity with our work.

However, for convenience, he decided to proceed with the dealership at the time of vehicle delivery.

Unfortunately, there was a misunderstanding regarding the package:

  • The client expected full front end PPF + ceramic coating
  • The delivered result was partial front end PPF + ceramic coating

Beyond the scope mismatch, there were also quality concerns.

Issues Identified

When the vehicle arrived at our facility, we documented several problems:

  • Misaligned PPF edges
  • Film lifting and overhang
  • Inconsistent finishing across panels
  • Evidence of blade marks from trimming directly on paint
  • Ceramic coating high spots that were not properly levelled

These issues not only affected appearance — they compromised the integrity of the vehicle’s finish.

Why This Matters

PPF and coating are meant to protect your vehicle.

Improper installation can lead to:

  • Premature film failure
  • Contamination under film
  • Permanent paint damage from cutting
  • Reduced resale value

In this case, the most critical issue was paint damage caused during installation.

The Restoration Process

To correct the vehicle properly, we followed a complete restoration approach:

1. Full Removal of Existing PPF

All previously installed film was removed to assess the condition of the paint.

2. Paint Correction & Repaint

Due to visible cut marks across multiple panels, the vehicle required professional repainting.

3. Paint Cure (Gas Out Period)

After repaint, the vehicle underwent a 3-week curing period to ensure proper outgassing before protection.

4. Full Body PPF Installation

We then installed full body Paint Protection Film, ensuring:

  • Precise alignment
  • Clean tucked edges
  • No exposed seams where possible
  • Proper panel coverage

5. Ceramic Coating Application

A properly installed coating was applied to:

  • Enhance gloss and depth
  • Provide hydrophobic protection
  • Improve ease of maintenance

Final Outcome

The vehicle was restored to the standard it should have been from the beginning:

  • Clean, consistent PPF installation
  • Properly corrected and protected paint
  • High-gloss, uniform finish
  • Long-term protection system in place

Cost & Time Consideration

This situation highlights something important for vehicle owners.

Because of the initial installation:

  • The project required repaint + reinstallation
  • Total timeline extended to approximately 3 months
  • Additional costs were incurred despite partial reimbursement

If completed correctly from the start:

  • The project would have taken approximately 5 days
  • Significant cost savings could have been achieved
  • No repaint would have been required

Choosing the Right Shop Matters

PPF and ceramic coating are highly dependent on installation quality.

At Speed Projects Laboratory, we focus on:

  • Proper preparation
  • Precision installation
  • Clean finishing techniques
  • Long-term durability

These are the details that make the difference.
