BMW M2 G87 Fire Red Metallic – PPF & Ceramic Coating in Richmond, BC

There’s something special about taking delivery of a brand-new BMW M2 G87, especially when it’s finished in the stunning factory Fire Red Metallic. With its aggressive styling, wide fenders, exposed carbon fibre roof, and vibrant metallic paintwork, this M2 is a vehicle that deserves to be enjoyed—and protected.

At Speed Projects Laboratory (SPL) in Richmond, BC, we recently completed a comprehensive paint protection project on this new BMW M2 G87, combining our PPF Package C PLUS, additional protection for vulnerable areas, and our ULTRA – Extended Preservation Coating Package.

What makes this project particularly meaningful is that the owner is a returning customer. We previously worked on his Lexus NX450h, installing a similar protection package, and we’re grateful that he chose to trust our team again with his new BMW.

For this M2, the goal was straightforward: preserve its beautiful factory red finish, protect the areas most vulnerable to everyday wear, and make long-term exterior maintenance easier.

A Returning Customer, a Brand-New BMW M2

When you’ve invested in a new performance vehicle, protecting its appearance from the beginning can make a significant difference over the years.

This customer was already familiar with SPL’s approach to vehicle protection after having similar work completed on his Lexus NX450h.

With his new BMW M2 G87, he chose to continue that approach rather than wait for rock chips, scratches, and environmental wear to accumulate.

The M2’s vibrant red finish is a major part of its appeal. Preserving that original colour and gloss was therefore an important priority.

Rather than opting for a full-body colour-change film, this project focused on protecting the existing factory finish with clear paint protection film and ceramic coating.

The result would retain the BMW’s original character while adding protection where it matters most.

BMW M2 G87 PPF Package C PLUS – High-Impact Protection

For this project, the customer selected our PPF Package C PLUS.

This package builds on full-front PPF coverage by extending protection to the lower doors and rocker panels, where road debris and tire spray can cause additional wear.

The package includes protection for:

  • Full front bumper
  • Full hood
  • Full front fenders
  • Mirror caps
  • A-pillars
  • Headlights
  • Lower doors and rocker panels

The objective is to provide a protective barrier over the areas most frequently exposed to stones, gravel, road debris, and other hazards encountered during regular driving.

Unlike partial-hood or partial-fender packages, full-panel coverage also avoids a visible horizontal film line across those surfaces.

For a vehicle with the BMW M2’s aggressive front end and wide bodywork, this approach provides a practical balance between substantial impact protection and the cost of a full-body installation.

Why High-Impact PPF Matters for the BMW M2

Performance-oriented vehicles often feature wide tires, prominent body panels, and lower exterior surfaces that can be exposed to road debris.

The M2 is no exception.

During everyday commuting, highway trips, or spirited driving, small stones and gravel can strike the front bumper, hood, lower doors, and areas surrounding the wheels.

Paint protection film helps absorb many minor impacts before they reach the original paint.

Although no film is completely resistant to damage, installing PPF early can help reduce the likelihood of permanent rock chips and wear on the factory finish.

For owners exploring different levels of protection, SPL also explains these coverage choices in our PPF pricing and coverage guide for Vancouver.

Additional PPF Protection Beyond Package C PLUS

One of the advantages of tailoring a protection package is the ability to address surfaces that may not be covered under a standard package.

For this BMW M2, the customer chose additional PPF coverage on several areas that deserve special attention.

Full Carbon Fibre Roof Protection

The M2’s exposed carbon fibre roof is one of the vehicle’s most distinctive exterior features.

Its visible carbon weave adds a motorsport-inspired appearance that contrasts beautifully with the red bodywork.

However, the roof is also exposed to sunlight, contamination, environmental fallout, and the effects of regular washing.

For this project, we installed clear PPF across the full carbon roof to help protect its finished surface while preserving the visibility of the carbon weave.

The goal was not to change the appearance of the roof, but to retain its original gloss and distinctive carbon fibre character.

With the film installed, the weave remains clearly visible under our detailing lights, and the surface benefits from an additional protective layer.

Door Cup and Door Handle Protection

Door handles and the recessed areas behind them are among the most frequently touched surfaces on a vehicle.

Over time, fingernails, rings, keys, and repeated contact can leave small scratches or scuffs around these areas.

For this M2, we added clear PPF to the door handle and door cup areas to help reduce everyday contact wear.

These may be relatively small surfaces, but protecting them early helps preserve the details that owners interact with every day.

Rear Luggage Area Protection

Loading and unloading bags, luggage, tools, or other belongings can create scratches around the rear bumper’s upper loading edge.

For this BMW M2, we applied additional PPF to the rear luggage loading area.

This creates a protective layer between the painted surface and the items that may come into contact with it during everyday use.

It’s a practical addition for owners who regularly use their vehicle rather than keeping it solely as a weekend car.

Rear Wheel Impact Area Protection

The bodywork around the rear wheels can be particularly vulnerable to gravel, road debris, and tire-thrown particles.

With the BMW M2’s broad rear bodywork and performance-focused proportions, this was another area worth addressing.

We added PPF protection to the specified rear wheel impact areas to help reduce wear where debris is more likely to contact the body.

Together with Package C PLUS, these additional pieces provide a more comprehensive approach to protecting the surfaces most exposed to driving-related damage.

Smoked PPF for the Front Bumper Side Markers

In addition to the clear protective film, the customer wanted a subtle cosmetic enhancement.

For this project, we applied smoked paint protection film to the front bumper side markers.

The tinted film slightly darkens the appearance of the markers, giving the front end a more cohesive and understated look against the M2’s bold red paint and black exterior accents.

It’s a relatively small detail, but it complements the vehicle’s aggressive styling without requiring a major exterior modification.

As with any tinted lighting or marker film, owners should consider visibility and applicable regulations when selecting a tint shade.

Proper Preparation Before PPF and Ceramic Coating

The finished appearance of paint protection film depends heavily on the condition and cleanliness of the surface before installation.

Even a brand-new vehicle can arrive with transport residue, road grime, or other contaminants that should be addressed before film application.

For this M2, our photographs document the preparation and installation process, including a thorough exterior wash, careful PPF application, and attention to film finishing.

Thorough Washing and Surface Preparation

Before applying the protection film and coating, the vehicle underwent a thorough exterior cleaning process.

This helped remove contamination from the painted surfaces and prepare the BMW for its protective treatments.

Careful preparation is particularly important on a highly reflective colour like this red, where imperfections and contamination can be more noticeable under strong lighting.

Precise Film Application and Finishing

The M2’s sculpted body panels and bumper geometry require careful film positioning and finishing.

During installation, our team worked across the front end, carbon roof, and additional protection areas.

We also paid attention to panel edges and the film’s final fit, using suitable finishing techniques where needed.

The objective was to achieve clean coverage that complements the BMW’s body lines while keeping the original paint colour and gloss as the visual focus.

Our previous Porsche 911 Carrera Track Package PPF installation demonstrates a similar philosophy: protecting the areas most exposed to driving hazards without unnecessarily covering every exterior panel.

ULTRA – Extended Preservation Ceramic Coating Package

After selecting his PPF coverage, the customer also chose SPL’s ULTRA – Extended Preservation Coating Package, just as he had for his previous Lexus NX450h.

Our ULTRA ceramic coating package is a five-year-rated exterior preservation program for applicable coated surfaces, with regular maintenance required to support its intended performance and warranty terms.

This provides a complementary layer of exterior care alongside the physical protection offered by PPF.

What Does Ceramic Coating Add?

Paint protection film and ceramic coating serve different purposes.

PPF helps protect vulnerable surfaces against rock chips, minor abrasion, and direct road debris impacts.

Ceramic coating, on the other hand, is primarily intended to improve surface properties such as:

  • Gloss and visual depth
  • Water repellency and hydrophobic behaviour
  • Ease of routine washing
  • Resistance to certain environmental contaminants
  • Long-term exterior appearance preservation

For this BMW M2, the coating complements the clear PPF by supporting easier exterior care and enhancing the appearance of the striking red finish.

Ceramic coating is not a substitute for the impact resistance of PPF, which is why combining the two services can make sense for customers seeking both physical protection and easier maintenance.

We’ve explained these differences in more detail in our guide to PPF versus ceramic coating.

Six-Month Coating Maintenance

One of the most important parts of our coating programs is regular maintenance.

Our ULTRA – Extended Preservation package follows a six-month maintenance cycle to help maintain the coated surfaces and support the applicable warranty requirements.

These visits allow us to assess the coating’s condition, remove accumulated contamination, and perform the prescribed maintenance services.

A coating’s long-term performance depends on appropriate washing, vehicle use, environmental conditions, and following the maintenance program.

For owners intending to keep their vehicles for several years, we believe proper maintenance is just as important as the original installation.

Coating durability and warranty coverage depend on the specific products and treated surfaces. PPF-compatible coating products may have different warranty terms from coatings applied to conventional painted panels.

The Finished Result: Stunning Red Paint With Added Protection

Once the PPF installation and coating work were completed, the BMW M2 G87 looked exceptional.

The vivid red paint, contrasted against the carbon fibre roof, dark exterior details, and distinctive BMW M styling, created a striking finished appearance.

Under our detailing lights, the glossy bodywork and protected carbon roof showed off the vehicle’s sharp lines and carefully finished surfaces.

The smoked front bumper side markers added a subtle styling detail, while the additional protective areas helped address the practical wear and tear that comes with regular vehicle use.

Most importantly, the project achieved the goal of protecting a brand-new performance car without taking away from its original appearance.

Why Protect a New BMW M2 Before Rock Chips Appear?

One of the main advantages of having PPF installed shortly after taking delivery is that the vehicle has had less opportunity to accumulate paint damage.

For vehicles driven throughout Richmond, Vancouver, and the Lower Mainland, common risks include road debris on highways, gravel and winter road material, and surface wear from normal use.

PPF is primarily preventative. Once paint has already chipped, installing film over the affected area does not restore the missing paint underneath.

By protecting the vehicle early, owners can help preserve more of its original finish.

This is especially worthwhile on a striking factory colour where visible stone chips or paint repairs may detract from the overall appearance.

Another Returning Customer at Speed Projects Laboratory

Having previously entrusted SPL with his Lexus NX450h, this customer chose to return when it was time to protect his new BMW M2.

We’re grateful for that continued confidence.

Every new vehicle presents different protection needs, and this project gave us the opportunity to combine familiar services with additional coverage tailored to the BMW’s carbon roof, body design, and everyday contact areas.

From the initial cleaning and PPF installation through to the final protective treatments, the aim was to deliver a result that the owner could enjoy for years to come.

The completed BMW M2 is a fantastic example of how carefully selected protection services can preserve a new vehicle’s original beauty while helping prepare it for real-world driving.

Frequently Asked Questions About BMW M2 PPF & Ceramic Coating

Is PPF worth it for a new BMW M2?

PPF can be a worthwhile investment for BMW M2 owners who want to reduce the risk of rock chips, road debris damage, and everyday surface wear. Installing protection while the vehicle is new helps preserve its original paint before significant driving-related damage occurs.

What does SPL’s PPF Package C PLUS include?

Package C PLUS includes full front bumper, hood, front fenders, mirror caps, A-pillars, headlights, and lower door or rocker panel protection. Additional areas such as the carbon roof, door cups, and rear wheel impact areas can be included as separate protection options.

Can you install PPF on the BMW M2 carbon fibre roof?

Yes. Suitable clear PPF can be installed over the finished surface of a BMW M2 carbon fibre roof to provide an additional protective layer while retaining the visible carbon weave. Installation and film selection should be appropriate for the roof’s surface and condition.

Why protect the BMW M2’s rocker panels and rear wheel impact areas?

These areas can be exposed to gravel, tire-thrown debris, and other road hazards. Additional PPF helps reduce paint damage in locations that may experience repeated impacts during everyday driving.

Can ceramic coating be applied after PPF installation?

Yes. Compatible ceramic coatings can be used as part of a combined PPF and coating protection plan. PPF primarily provides physical impact protection, while ceramic coating can improve hydrophobic behaviour and ease of cleaning. The coating product must be suitable for the surface being treated.

How long does SPL’s ULTRA ceramic coating last?

SPL’s ULTRA – Extended Preservation Coating Package is rated for five years on applicable surfaces, subject to the coating system, use conditions, and required maintenance. The program includes a six-month maintenance schedule, and product-specific terms may differ for PPF-covered surfaces.

Does ceramic coating prevent rock chips on a BMW M2?

No. Ceramic coating does not provide the same impact protection as paint protection film. For areas vulnerable to stone chips and road debris, PPF is generally the more suitable protective product.
