At Speed Projects Laboratory’s Performance Division, we often work with vehicles that already have aftermarket upgrades — but aren’t fully optimized.
This BMW M4 (F82) came in running a Dinan plug-and-play tuning box, paired with newly installed catless downpipes.
While piggyback systems offer a quick entry into tuning, they have limitations — especially when paired with more aggressive hardware upgrades.
The Problem: Check Engine Light & Limited Performance

After upgrading to catless downpipes, the vehicle began triggering a check engine light (CEL).
The issue:
- Dinan piggyback module could not suppress CEL caused by downpipes
- No proper calibration for Stage 2 setup
- Engine not operating at full optimized potential
Piggyback systems work by intercepting signals — but they don’t directly recalibrate the ECU.
Why Piggyback Tuning Falls Short

Piggyback modules are designed for:
- Mild performance increases
- Simplicity and ease of installation
- Plug-and-play convenience
However, they are limited when it comes to:
- Advanced tuning adjustments
- Hardware-specific calibration
- Emissions-related fault management
- Full performance optimization
For setups involving catless downpipes, a proper ECU tune becomes essential.
The Solution: Stage 2 ECU Performance Tune

We performed the following:
1. Removal of Dinan Piggyback Module
The existing tuning box was safely removed to allow direct ECU calibration.
2. Stage 2 ECU Tune
We installed a Stage 2 ECU Tuning Group ECU performance tune calibrated specifically for:
- Catless downpipes
- Increased airflow
- Optimized fuel and ignition mapping
3. Full Diagnostic Check
Before returning the vehicle, we completed:
- Fault code scan
- System verification
- Final performance check
The Result

With the proper ECU tune in place, the vehicle now benefits from:
- ✔ Check engine light resolved
- ✔ Proper calibration for hardware upgrades
- ✔ Improved power delivery
- ✔ Smoother and more responsive driving experience
Why Proper Tuning Matters
Performance upgrades should work together, not against each other.
A proper ECU tune ensures:
- All modifications are fully optimized
- The engine runs safely and efficiently
- You get the performance you paid for
